Indiana Wesleyan University hosts third annual MLK Celebration

Indiana Wesleyan University will host the third annual MLK Celebration honoring Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday, Jan. 15. The special community-wide event will honor King’s legacy with scripture and song throughout the day.
 
To start the celebration, a student chapel service at 10 a.m. will feature songs and a message by Bishop J. Drew Sheard, a renowned pastor from Detroit, Michigan. Sheard is senior pastor of Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ, and he serves as a member of the Presidium of the Church of God in Christ. He is also the jurisdictional Bishop of the Michigan-North Central Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction.
 
Many community members also will come together at 6:30 p.m. for the MLK Celebration Concert “Living the Dream”. The concert will feature an evening of gospel music performed by a combined choir of community members under the direction of Mr. Rodnie Bryant, a prominent Indianapolis-based director, producer and arranger. The Community Choir includes IWU students, staff and faculty; community members from Marion and Indianapolis; and Golden Singers from Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts & Humanities in Indianapolis. Also performing will be instrumentalists as well as a dance ensemble from Faith in Motion Christian School of Dance and Fitness in Marion.
 
“Throughout IWU’s footprint, our annual MLK Celebration is quickly becoming a signature event,” said Diane McDaniel, vice president for Multicultural Enrichment and Employee Development. “This event ushers in a new year messaging hope, remembering and revisiting our call to service, and providing a venue that allows generations of humankind to gather and reflect on past and future dreams.”
 
All MLK Celebration events are open to the public and will take place in the Chapel Auditorium on IWU’s residential campus in Marion, Indiana.
